What would happen if I wore a cocktail dress to a "business formal"-designated awards ceremony at a museum?

My company is having a patent awards banquet held at an art museum, and the invitation says "business formal." I do not want to wear a suit on a Friday night. It will only be the R&D department, so there is no networking involved...I want to wear an elegant cocktail dress. What do you think?

1. Bad idea....don't want to appear inappropriate especially when the dress code HAS BEEN determined by the employer.... Wear a suit with a cami/slinky top underneath to dress it up
2. opt for a silk or embellished unique cami under a suit or nice pencil skirt and jacket...dress the suit up with unique shoes that will really make your outfit one of a kind...
